Microsoft Unveils Sequential Diagnostic AI Outperforming Doctors and Sets Healthcare Partnerships

Microsoft has unveiled a sequential artificial intelligence diagnostic orchestration system that significantly outperforms human generalist physicians on complex medical cases. According to research published in the journal Science, Microsoft's MAI-DxO system achieved an 83% accuracy rate on challenging cases, compared to 36% for human generalists, and reached nearly 87% accuracy when paired with OpenAI's GPT-5.5. The sequential approach also reduced diagnostic work-up costs. To expand its healthcare footprint, Microsoft announced partnerships with Mayo Clinic to develop a foundation model for release next year and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for real-world emergency triage trials.
