Microsoft to give DARPA hands-on access to quantum system at new Maryland site

Microsoft Corporation has announced that it will provide the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) with direct, on-site access to its latest quantum computing hardware. The hardware will be housed at a newly established research center in Maryland, developed alongside the University of Maryland and industry partners. The facility will feature a quantum system powered by Microsoft's proprietary Majorana 2 chip for independent testing and benchmarking. This initiative transitions DARPA from remote access in Washington and Europe to physical, dedicated on-site hardware evaluation. DARPA is assessing various industry approaches to determine whether economically viable quantum computing systems can be achieved by 2033, with a primary metric focusing on whether computational performance exceeds system cost. Microsoft has designed the Maryland infrastructure to allow seamless upgrades as newer quantum processors are engineered. For market participants, Microsoft's progress underscores its leadership in next-generation computing architectures.
