Microsoft Takes Over Stargate Norway Data Center From OpenAI

Microsoft agreed to rent data-center capacity and 30,000 additional Nvidia Vera Rubin chips at an Nscale campus in Narvik, Norway, effectively taking over capacity originally marketed to OpenAI’s “Stargate” initiative. The deal builds on a prior $6.2 billion Microsoft commitment at the site and follows Microsoft’s broader push to secure cloud capacity (including a recent Texas project takeover and a 3,200-acre land purchase in Wyoming). Google is separately renting capacity at an Nscale West London facility using Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips. The moves highlight rising demand for AI-focused infrastructure, support Microsoft’s heavy capex profile (Wall Street expects roughly $143 billion this year), and may tighten supply for Nvidia-powered cloud capacity — a potential positive for Microsoft’s cloud growth and for Nvidia chip demand.
