Microsoft head of communications Frank Shaw leaving after nearly 30 years of shaping the software giant’s public messaging

Microsoft's Chief Communications Officer Frank X. Shaw has announced his departure from the software giant after nearly three decades of directing the company's public relations and messaging strategy. Shaw, who has served as head of communications for 17 years and worked alongside all three of Microsoft's CEOs—Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and Satya Nadella—plans to remain in his role until the end of the year before pursuing new ventures. Shaw's exit marks the latest in a broader wave of executive leadership transitions and structural reorganizations as Microsoft heavily focuses resources on its Copilot artificial intelligence initiatives and cloud infrastructure. Over the past two years, the company has undertaken major leadership shifts across its Copilot, Windows, and gaming divisions, following workforce reductions of more than 15,000 employees in 2025 and new employee buyout programs. The leadership shift comes during a pivotal period of AI transformation, with Microsoft's Azure cloud business recently surpassing $100 billion in annual revenue driven by surging AI compute demand, while the company continues expanding proprietary models like MAI-Thinking-1.
