Meta Muse AI may throw gas on the labor displacement problem — but it's not all doom and gloom

The early rollout and success of Meta Platforms' Muse AI agent has renewed discussions regarding AI-driven labor market disruption and macroeconomic productivity. Apollo Global Management Chief Economist Torsten Sløk highlighted that while advanced AI agents like Muse have the capability to replace tasks and displace workers across corporate environments, the technology also acts as an economic catalyst that drives new product creation and aggregate employment growth over time. Several major tech companies have conducted significant workforce reductions tied to AI restructuring, including Block slashing 40% of staff, alongside layoffs at Amazon, Dell, Oracle, Coinbase, Cloudflare, Meta, and Uber's 10% cut. Despite displacement fears, broader macroeconomic employment figures show resilience, with the US adding approximately 640,000 net nonfarm payroll jobs through August. Furthermore, Gartner research projects that 30% of employees laid off due to AI displacement will eventually be rehired by 2029 at significantly higher wages, underscoring complex long-term structural shifts in enterprise demand.
