Meta, Google, OpenAI among Big Tech firms seeing top staff leaving to launch AI startups
Top researchers from Big Tech — including Meta and Google labs — are leaving to start AI companies and quickly raising large funding rounds, reshaping the AI talent and funding landscape. VCs have poured $18.8 billion into AI startups founded since the start of 2025 (2026 YTD), and several months-old firms have secured blockbuster rounds: Ineffable Intelligence raised a $1.1 billion seed, AMI Labs announced $1 billion, Humans& raised $480 million, and Ricursive Intelligence raised $335 million. Investors say the race among major AI labs has created vacuums in exploratory research and opened opportunities for nimble startups focused on alternative architectures, reinforcement learning, chip design and vertical models. Market implications include intensified competition for talent, faster commercialisation of novel approaches, and heightened investor interest in AI-related equities and infrastructure providers.
