Meta deal will help plastics recycling startup MacroCycle build its first factory

Meta Platforms, Inc. has finalized an agreement with Cambridge, Massachusetts-based plastics recycling startup MacroCycle to purchase environmental attribute credits (EACs) generated from its low-carbon recycling process. The partnership provides MacroCycle with essential revenue to construct its first commercial demonstration plant in the United States, designed to produce 5,000 metric tons of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic annually, with future facilities targeted at 50,000 metric tons. MacroCycle's proprietary chemical recycling technology dissolves and purifies plastic waste using solvents rather than high heat, yielding recycled materials identical to virgin plastics while generating 80% fewer greenhouse gas emissions. For Meta, this first-of-its-kind agreement directly addresses its expanding carbon footprint resulting from aggressive AI infrastructure deployment and power consumption. In addition to securing credits to offset emissions, Meta aims to stimulate commercial demand and supply chain availability for sustainable materials used in packaging and hardware manufacturing.
