Meat-alternatives production declines in Germany
German production of vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes fell slightly in 2025, with output at 124,900 tonnes (-1.2% year-on-year) and value slipping 2.2% to €632.6m. Despite the annual dip, the category has grown 107% since 2019. Conventional meat production and value remain vastly larger — €45.2bn in 2025, up 2% and more than 70 times the value of meat alternatives — while per-capita meat consumption rose to 54.9kg. GFI Europe data show plant-based meat sales reached €759m in 2024, modestly increasing market share to ~3.1% of pre-packaged meat sales by 2024. Implication: plant-based is growing long term but remains a niche versus traditional meat, limiting immediate market disruption.
