Massive AI boom puts one of America’s oldest manufacturers on path to double in size, CEO says
The rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence infrastructure is driving massive demand beyond microchips and power grids, placing optical fiber manufacturing at the center of the AI data center boom. Advanced high-speed glass connections are essential to transmit immense volumes of data between computing servers and AI processors. To meet this surging demand, Corning is partnering with NVIDIA to build three advanced optical-manufacturing facilities across North Carolina and Texas. The joint initiative is projected to create more than 3,000 domestic advanced manufacturing jobs while expanding Corning's U.S. optical-manufacturing capacity tenfold. According to Corning Chairman and CEO Wendell Weeks, the unprecedented demand generated by the AI buildout is driving the fastest expansion in the company's nearly 175-year history. Weeks stated that the company expects to roughly double its size in the coming years, highlighting that physical hardware, advanced materials, and optical interconnects remain critical components and bottlenecks in scaling AI data center capacity.
