Man Reclaims $4.4M in Bitcoin 12 Years After Exchange Collapse
A British investor known under the pseudonym Chris successfully recovered 61 Bitcoin, now valued at approximately 3.3 million pounds ($4.4 million), twelve years after losing access during the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange Intersango. Originally purchased in 2011 when Bitcoin was trading between 0.16 and 16 pounds, the assets were trapped when the unlicensed UK exchange halted operations in early 2014. Following years of writing off the loss, the investor engaged CEL Solicitors, a litigation firm specializing in lost cryptocurrency recovery. Over a four-month process involving submissions to U.S. courts, the legal team negotiated the return of the funds directly without requiring a lengthy trial. The recovery highlights the exponential long-term appreciation of early crypto holdings alongside ongoing debates regarding exchange counterparty risks and self-custody practices. While modern centralized exchanges are subject to stricter regulatory oversight, incidents involving defunct platforms continue to demonstrate the security value of private key ownership.
