Japan Services Producer Prices Rise 3.7% in August, Marking Two-Year High

Japan's Services Producer Price Index accelerated to 3.7% year-on-year in August, up from 3.6% in July, reaching its fastest pace in over two years. The headline acceleration was heavily driven by soaring transportation expenses, with ocean freight rates surging roughly 74% and overall international transportation rising 63.6%. Excluding international transportation, service inflation held steady at 3.2% year-on-year. Labor-intensive service prices rose slightly to 2.8% from 2.7%, while hotel price inflation dropped sharply to 1.6% from 6.3%. The persistent service costs support the Bank of Japan's case for further monetary tightening following its rate hike to 1.25% in September.
