Is Bitcoin Quantum-Proof? Yes and No, VanEck's Matthew Sigel Says
Matthew Sigel, head of digital assets research at VanEck, addressed long-term technological risks and current leverage dynamics surrounding Bitcoin during an interview with CNBC. Sigel acknowledged that advances in quantum computing present a legitimate threat to Bitcoin's existing cryptographic framework. However, he emphasized that the developer and research community has recognized the issue and is actively developing upgrade paths toward quantum resistance. Although decentralized governance makes implementing major protocol changes slower than at traditional corporations, feasible solutions exist. In addition to technical risks, Sigel pushed back against concerns regarding market fragility and systemic leverage. Unlike the previous market cycle—which saw catastrophic collapses from opaque entities such as FTX, Celsius, Genesis, and BlockFi—today's leverage is considerably more transparent. Exposure is largely concentrated in regulated venues like CME futures and publicly traded company debt instruments, substantially reducing systemic risks across the cryptocurrency market ecosystem.
