Instagram Introduces Instants, Meta's New Private Photo Sharing App

Meta (Instagram) launched Instants, a new Instagram-integrated app for private, unedited photo sharing that disappear after 24 hours. The feature aims to boost engagement and counter rivals like Snapchat and BeReal by enabling quick “photo dumps” to close friends directly from the Instagram inbox. While Instants could increase time spent on Instagram and create additional touchpoints for monetization, the rollout raises privacy and safety concerns — Instagram says screenshots won’t be allowed but users can still capture images via other devices or screen-recording tools. The move comes as Meta is testing paid Instagram subscriptions ($1–$2) and recently halted end-to-end encryption on Instagram DMs, factors that may influence user trust and regulatory scrutiny.
