How Bitmine could surpass its 5% Ethereum goal without buying more ETH
Nasdaq-listed treasury company Bitmine has increased its Ethereum holdings to 5.9 million ETH following the acquisition of 53,501 tokens in late August, with an unconfirmed additional purchase of 51,000 ETH worth approximately $126 million reported on September 1. With more than 5.06 million ETH already staked at an annualized 7-day yield of 2.67%, Bitmine generates roughly 135,000 ETH annually in staking rewards. This substantial staking volume provides an organic mechanism to reach the company's publicly stated goal of acquiring 5% of Ethereum's total circulating supply. However, mathematical modeling indicates that achieving the 5% threshold without further open-market purchases depends heavily on reward retention rates and network supply dynamics. With flat Ethereum supply, Bitmine would need to retain approximately 74% of staking rewards over two years. Because the company routinely converts a portion of rewards into cash to fund operations, infrastructure costs, and preferred stock dividend distributions, reward retention policy rather than outright purchasing power will serve as the primary determinant for Bitmine reaching its ownership target.
