High Oil Prices Fuel Clearwater Drilling Rush in Alberta

High oil prices are accelerating drilling in Alberta’s Clearwater formation, a fast-cycle heavy oil play. Alberta approved 1,764 drilling licenses from January 1 to June 12, the busiest start since 2014, with roughly one-fifth targeting Clearwater. Producers including Tamarack Valley Energy and Headwater Exploration have raised 2026 capital budgets in response to firmer prices and Middle East tensions.
