Google's latest AI weather model gives you no excuse to forget your umbrella

Google DeepMind and Google Research have launched WeatherNext 3, a next-generation artificial intelligence weather forecasting model designed to deliver higher-resolution and more frequent meteorological predictions. The new model outperforms competing AI forecasting systems developed by Microsoft and Nvidia, as well as traditional physics-based forecasts from the US National Weather Service and ECMWF on the Operational WeatherBench benchmark. WeatherNext 3 features 2.4 times more parameters than its predecessor, providing predictions down to a 5-kilometer resolution, a 60% improvement in precipitation evaluation, and hourly forecast outputs enabled by direct real-time satellite data ingestion. The launch marks a major commercial step as Google begins integrating the model's core variables into mainstream products including Google Search, Google Maps, Gemini, and its Google Cloud platform. By embedding state-of-the-art AI meteorology into its enterprise and consumer ecosystem, Google strengthens its competitive edge in AI applications. The model's granular atmospheric insights also offer commercial value for renewable energy dependability and agricultural planning.
