Google, UC San Diego to Build 2,000-Phone Data Center from Retired Pixels

Google and UC San Diego are advancing plans to convert 2,000 retired Pixel smartphones into a functional data center by clustering their motherboards as low-carbon servers. Backed by Google Research since June 12, 2026, the full phone-cluster system is slated to launch in fall 2026 and deliver roughly 50 server-equivalents of compute for educational workloads such as Jupyter Notebooks. Early 25-50 board tests already matched conventional servers, and the setup is expected to support about 100 classes at a fraction of normal cost while cutting e-waste. The initiative remains an academic pilot and will not replace GPU infrastructure for AI training.
