Google Translate adds background mode and earpiece support

Google has announced new upgrades to its Translate application for iOS and Android platforms, introducing capabilities tailored for extended sessions and hands-free usability. Under the update, Android users are now able to maintain live audio translations in the background, facilitating multitasking or locking their smartphone screens while active translation continues. Google disclosed that more than one-third of all live translation sessions currently extend beyond five minutes, underscoring growing user demand for continuous processing. Additionally, iOS users worldwide can now direct live translations through their device's earpiece, aligning functionality with Android. The earpiece feature is designed for discrete listening in noisy environments like airports and guided tours. The live translate feature supports audio translations in over 70 languages, with background translation capabilities scheduled to roll out to iOS in the near future. These enhancements reflect Alphabet's ongoing strategy to strengthen its core artificial intelligence and machine learning applications. By improving user retention and daily utility across its mobile software ecosystem, Google aims to defend its search and translation leadership against competing mobile AI assistants.
