Google Tests In-Orbit Artificial Intelligence Hardware with Project Suncatcher Satellite Launch

Google has begun testing orbital machine learning infrastructure following the launch of its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter-18 rideshare mission. Developed in partnership with Planet, the refrigerator-sized satellite runs on approximately one kilowatt of power and carries four proprietary Tensor Processing Units. Ground communication has been confirmed with all onboard systems operating as planned. The multi-week mission aims to evaluate how Google's AI chips endure cosmic radiation, physical stresses, and extreme thermal shifts to assess the viability of outer-space data compute resources.
