Google settles lawsuit with Epic Games, agrees to allow third-party app stores on Android

Alphabet’s Google announced a major change to its Android app ecosystem: starting July 22, third-party U.S.-based app stores will be allowed access to the Play Store’s app catalog through a new Play Catalog Access Program. The move follows Google’s settlement with Epic Games and appears aimed at easing competition and addressing regulatory and legal pressure around app-store restrictions. Third-party stores must meet requirements including being legitimate U.S. marketplaces, focusing on app discovery/installation/management, preventing illegal activity, and paying a $5,000 service fee for security review.
