Google connects new transatlantic cable between Portugal and the US

Google (Alphabet) announced that its new transatlantic subsea cable, Nuvem, has been successfully connected to Sines, Portugal, adding a new high-capacity U.S.-Europe data route. The cable links Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with Portugal via Bermuda and the Azores and is designed to support surging demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence services. Nuvem spans about 7,000 km and has a total design capacity of roughly 384 terabits per second, reinforcing Google Cloud’s infrastructure footprint in Europe. The project also supports Portugal’s push to become a hub for data centers, AI and digital infrastructure, alongside renewable-energy-powered capacity development. The announcement is supportive for Alphabet’s long-term cloud and AI strategy, but the immediate market impact is likely limited and more strategic than financially material in the near term.
