Germany’s construction sector remained deep in contraction in May as the PMI edged up only to 42.4 from 42.1 in April, according to S&P Global data released June 4. This follows final services PMI figures on June 3 that showed modest improvement to 48.1 from the 47.8 preliminary reading, with the composite PMI rising to 48.8 versus 48.6 expected; both readings stayed below the 50 expansion threshold. The combined data releases underscore persistent weakness across Germany’s services and construction sectors, capping upside for the Germany 40 index despite slightly less severe declines than initially feared.
