German retail sales rebound 1.3% in August, missing consensus of 1.5%

German retail sales rebounded 1.3% month-over-month in August 2026, slightly missing consensus forecasts of a 1.5% increase, according to data from Destatis. On an annual basis, real retail sales remained 0.4% lower. The monthly gain follows a sharp 3.4% decline in July, which was exacerbated by the expiration of a fuel discount that prompted a 9.1% drop in petrol station sales. In August, online spending rose 3.7% and non-food sales rose 1.6%, while petrol station sales were flat. Market impact remained limited ahead of key upcoming inflation releases.
