German Import Prices Jump 1.0% in August, Topping Expectations at 8.3% Annually

German import prices rose 1.0% month-over-month in August 2026, exceeding economists' expectations of 0.7% and accelerating from 0.2% in July. According to Destatis, annual import price inflation reached 8.3%, topping the 8.0% consensus and rising from 6.8% the previous month. This marks the fastest annual pace since December 2022. Upstream cost pressures were led by imported energy prices, which surged 43.0% year-over-year, while intermediate goods increased 11.0%. The hotter-than-expected data reinforces upside inflation risks, offering modest support for the euro while lifting bund yields and reinforcing hawkish European Central Bank expectations.
