FTSE 100 rises as Shell boosts energy stocks despite mining weakness
The FTSE 100 edged 0.2% higher to 10,673.85 as energy stocks outperformed, led by Shell’s 2.4% rise after it lifted its second-quarter gas production forecast and signaled stronger gas trading than in the prior quarter. BP also gained 0.9%, helping offset weakness in precious metals miners, which fell 1.9% as gold prices softened on a stronger US dollar. Consumer names such as Burberry, Diageo and Unilever added further support, rising 3% to 3.7%. In contrast, the FTSE 250 slipped 0.2%. The move reflects sector rotation into energy and defensive consumer stocks while miners remain under pressure from macro headwinds and geopolitical uncertainty.
