French regulator says most e-commerce platform products it tested breach EU rules

France’s consumer watchdog (DGCCRF) found that 75% of more than 600 products bought from seven foreign e‑commerce platforms in 2025 failed to meet EU rules, with 46% judged both non‑compliant and dangerous. Tests — focused on high‑risk categories — flagged all electrical appliances as non‑compliant (nearly three‑quarters dangerous) and widespread safety/chemical breaches in children’s items, jewellery and clothing. The DGCCRF will share results with the European Commission, which can levy fines up to 6% of global turnover under the Digital Services Act and has opened probes into Shein, Temu (PDD) and Alibaba’s AliExpress. Markets should weigh increased regulatory and legal risk for global discount e‑commerce platforms, potential fines, reputational damage and tighter enforcement across the EU, which could pressure related stocks and sector valuations.
