Fidelity sends blunt message on S&P 500 after sudden rebound

Fidelity strategist Jurrien Timmer warned that the S&P 500’s recent, rapid rebound may be overstretched and cautioned investors against declaring victory. The index recently hit a record 7,137.90 and now sits in the low 7,100s, supported by strong earnings momentum (consensus ~13% growth) and big-tech leadership, but Timmer flagged risks from technicals, bond yields, the dollar and persistently high oil prices that could squeeze consumers. He noted forward P/E remains about 9.5% below its peak, and while forward revisions have held up, the swift rally raises the chance of a pullback. Wall Street year‑end targets cited range roughly 7,500–7,800, underscoring differing upside views. Overall the note is a cautious institutional outlook urging vigilance despite earnings-driven support.
