Europe Built Walls Against Chinese EVs. Stellantis Built a Door.

Stellantis has signed a joint venture MoU with China’s state-owned Dongfeng to build Voyah-branded electric and hybrid vehicles at its underused Rennes plant, with Stellantis holding 51% and Dongfeng 49%. Building in Europe lets Voyah avoid the extra import duty (up to 35% on top of a 10% tariff), turning idle factory capacity into revenue while leveraging Stellantis’ dealer and after-sales network and Dongfeng’s supply chain. Market impact is twofold: it could provide near-term cash flow and utilization relief for European automakers (supporting constituents of the Europe 50 index), but it also risks increasing competitive pressure on European brands and drawing regulatory/political scrutiny. The agreement is a non-binding MoU, so execution and wider sector implications remain uncertain.
