EUR Analysis: Critical Vulnerability to Energy Shocks and Ukraine Financing Crisis – Rabobank Charts Reveal
Rabobank’s new research warns the euro is structurally vulnerable to renewed energy shocks and rising Ukraine financing needs, projecting downside pressure on EUR/USD through 2025. The bank finds a strong inverse correlation between European natural gas (TTF) moves and the euro, with monthly energy spikes (>20%) linked to 1.5–3% immediate EUR depreciation and the EUR now ~40% more sensitive to such shocks than before 2022. Rabobank models show baseline EUR/USD underperformance of 2–4% vs fundamentals and stress scenarios implying 8–12% drops if energy and funding shocks coincide. Markets are already pricing risk: six‑month EUR option implied vol rose to 9.2% and demand for downside protection has increased. Policymaker constraints limit quick fixes, raising near‑term downside risk for EUR exposure.
