Ethereum Researchers Propose Quantum-Resistant Key Registry to Secure Network

Ethereum researchers led by Thomas Coratger and Justin Drake proposed a post-quantum (PQ) key registry to make the network resistant to future quantum-computer attacks. The design uses a smart-contract registry where validators can register quantum-resistant public keys while continuing to operate with existing BLS keys. A two-phase transition—voluntary registration followed by a protocol switch to the new keys once a supermajority of validators have registered—aims to upgrade crypto security with minimal disruption. While large-scale quantum threats are likely a decade away, the proposal signals proactive risk management that could boost institutional confidence in Ethereum’s long-term security. No formal EIP or timeline has been announced yet.
