Ethereum developers propose first step to protect ETH staking from quantum attacks

Ethereum researchers have published a draft proposal aimed at overhauling the network's validator deposit contract to prepare for future quantum computing threats. The proposal, suggested under the identifier EIP-8394, would allow validators to deposit using quantum-resistant cryptographic keys while eventually ending acceptance of the hard-coded BLS signature format currently used across the network. Currently, about 42.4 million ETH—valued at approximately $104 billion—is staked on Ethereum. While BLS signatures aggregate hundreds of thousands of signatures efficiently, they rely on elliptic curve cryptography that could potentially be compromised by quantum machines running Shor's algorithm. The initiative follows research from Google Quantum AI highlighting attack vectors across smart contracts, wallets, and staking. The proposal marks an initial step in Ethereum's multi-year post-quantum transition roadmap. The Ethereum Foundation has targeted roughly 2029 for executing core quantum-resistant protocol upgrades, ensuring long-term network security and validator integrity without disrupting existing staked assets.
