Ethereum advances scaling with EIP-8141, a new transaction type that splits one tx into up to 64 frames

Ethereum core developers have advanced EIP-8141, a major network scaling proposal scheduled for inclusion in the 2027 Hegotá hard fork. Co-authored by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and key contributors, the proposal introduces "Frame Transactions" (Type 0x06), enabling a single transaction to be divided into up to 64 programmable sub-units or frames within one atomic execution. Each frame operates in one of three modes—DEFAULT, VERIFY, or SENDER—incurring an intrinsic base cost of 12,000 gas plus 475 gas per frame. This upgrade brings native account abstraction directly to Ethereum's base layer without relying on external bundlers or relayers required by earlier ERC-4337 and EIP-7702 frameworks. The design unlocks streamlined gas sponsorship, atomic batching, ERC-20 token fee payments, and post-quantum cryptographic readiness. By lowering interaction barriers and gas overhead, EIP-8141 is expected to significantly improve decentralized application usability and network throughput, bolstering the long-term utility and adoption of the Ethereum blockchain ecosystem.
