Elon Musk Says His New Foundry Can Get Gas Turbines Online 18 Months Faster. Here's What This "Profound Game Changer" Would Mean for SpaceX and Tesla.
SpaceX is developing a specialized foundry in Bastrop, Texas, designed to manufacture natural gas turbine blades and vanes in-house. Chief Executive Elon Musk stated this internal manufacturing capability could accelerate turbine production timelines by up to 18 months, addressing a critical bottleneck in the artificial intelligence power infrastructure supply chain. The initiative has significant strategic implications for both SpaceX and Tesla. With Musk aiming to construct 10 gigawatts or more of terrestrial data center capacity by the end of 2027, power generation remains the primary constraint. SpaceX and Tesla are also targeting 100 gigawatts of annual solar manufacturing capacity in the United States, supplemented by natural gas generation in the medium term. For Tesla, the broader expansion of power-hungry AI infrastructure offers substantial growth catalysts for its Energy division, specifically its Megapack battery storage and expanding solar operations. Rapidly deployable generation combined with energy storage is poised to become an essential revenue driver as grid demands escalate.
