Crypto for Advisors: How staking on Ethereum is changing in 2026

Ethereum staking has transitioned from a crypto-native activity into a key balance sheet item for institutional investors and corporate treasuries. Public companies holding Ether are increasingly utilizing staking yields as a primary earnings driver, highlighted by Bitmine generating 98% of its revenue from staking rewards. Unlike Bitcoin, which cannot generate native yield, ETH allows corporate treasuries to put capital to work either via native staking or liquid staking structures that maintain liquidity. The Ethereum network is implementing institutional-grade architectural upgrades, including the planned Glamsterdam hard fork scheduled for the second half of 2026. This upgrade incorporates enshrined proposer-builder separation (EIP-7732), which reduces reliance on off-chain intermediaries, standardizes block production, and facilitates validator fleet management. These technical improvements, alongside post-quantum resilience and greater decentralization, enhance the blockchain's appeal to institutional capital. Financial advisors evaluating ETH staking products must assess key risk factors, including validator slashing liabilities, liquid staking liquidity tradeoffs, and infrastructure redundancy. Furthermore, predictable protocol issuance rewards are increasingly prioritized over variable maximal extractable value (MEV) to provide more stable, forecastable returns.
