Crypto Borrowers Increasingly Tap Bitcoin Loans for Tuition, Payroll, and Real Estate

Bitcoin holders are increasingly utilizing crypto-backed loans to finance real-world obligations, such as tuition, payroll, and real estate, instead of speculative trading. Borrowers are pledging Bitcoin to access liquidity without incurring taxable events or sacrificing potential upside. In response, lenders are moving toward fixed-rate, mortgage-style debt products with extended maturities. Origination activity has expanded significantly across major platforms, with Ledn issuing over $11 billion in crypto loans since 2018, Coinbase maintaining over $1.4 billion in outstanding Bitcoin-backed loans, and SALT Lending funding over $2 billion since 2016.
