Colossus data center buildouts: Can they ever be duplicated?

SpaceX has rapidly accelerated its AI infrastructure development following its early 2026 acquisition of xAI, successfully completing the power infrastructure and shells for its Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 data centers in Memphis, Tennessee. According to analysis by SemiAnalysis, Colossus 2 represents the world's first gigawatt-scale data center facility. SpaceX is also planning a third adjacent facility drawing energy from a newly acquired power plant site in Southaven, Mississippi permitted for over 1 gigawatt. While traditional hyperscalers face multi-year interconnect queues and transmission constraints, SpaceX achieved rapid deployment by adopting unconventional behind-the-meter solutions. These strategies included leasing large fleets of mobile gas turbines, acquiring existing distressed industrial properties with pre-built utility links, and utilizing modular microgrids. Colossus 1 reached operational status within a record 122 days, scaling to 300 megawatts. The swift deployment has enabled SpaceX to secure major high-value anchor tenant agreements, including deals with Anthropic valued at approximately $31 billion and Google at $48 billion.
