Coinbase has published technical priorities urging the Bitcoin ecosystem to initiate a multi-year migration to post-quantum cryptography. Holding roughly 5% of circulating Bitcoin, Coinbase warned that necessary network-wide infrastructure changes require extensive lead time. The exchange proposed modular container designs, including P2MR (BIP-360) and P2TRv2, along with hybrid transition models evaluating algorithms like ML-DSA, SLH-DSA, and FN-DSA. To prevent governance delays, Coinbase advised separating contentious issues surrounding dormant wallets and lost keys from the core technical upgrades. No formal post-quantum Bitcoin Improvement Proposal or activation timeline has yet been submitted to core developers.
