Coinbase Is Bringing Perp-Style Index Futures To Allow Traders To Speculate On AI, China And US Defense Industry
Coinbase will launch perpetual-style equity index futures on June 8, offering U.S. traders exposure to themes including AI, China, U.S. defense and Nasdaq innovators via MarketVector indexes (U.S. Listed AI10, China 10, Defense 10 and Innovators 100). Unlike true perpetuals, Coinbase’s contracts will expire after five years to comply with U.S. rules. The product broadens Coinbase’s derivatives offering beyond crypto, could channel more retail and institutional flows into thematic equity exposures, and raises potential trading and liquidity impacts for large index constituents (e.g., Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon). The move follows Coinbase’s prior off‑shore perpetual launches and comes as U.S. regulators (CFTC) contemplate broader acceptance of perpetual-style products, while Coinbase also secured CFTC-related approvals to connect U.S. clients to global crypto perpetuals and options. Overall, the rollout increases avenues for speculative and hedging activity in major equities and thematic indices without implying immediate directional pressure on the S&P 500.
