CME to Launch VIX-Style Bitcoin Volatility Futures on June 1

The CME will launch BVI, a VIX-style Bitcoin volatility futures contract, on June 1, 2026 after receiving CFTC certification. BVI tracks the CME CF Bitcoin Volatility Index Settlement (BVXS), a 30‑day implied volatility measure, with each contract’s notional equal to the index value multiplied by $500. Initial monthly listings are June and July 2026. The product gives institutions a regulated, centrally cleared way to trade or hedge Bitcoin volatility—filling a gap beyond options and OTC derivatives—and is likely to improve risk management, price discovery and liquidity in the broader Bitcoin derivatives market. The CFTC signoff and CME listing could encourage similar volatility products for other digital assets (notably Ether) and signal rising institutional demand for sophisticated crypto risk tools.
