Cathay Pacific, Google expand AI trials to cut climate-warming aircraft contrails

Cathay Pacific and Alphabet Inc.'s Google have announced the expansion of their joint artificial intelligence trials aimed at reducing climate-warming aircraft contrails. Google's predictive AI technology analyzes weather and atmospheric conditions to identify cold, high-humidity zones where contrails are prone to form, allowing pilots to optimize and adjust flight altitudes during live operations. An initial testing phase across more than 80 Cathay Pacific flights achieved an estimated 40% reduction in contrail-driven warming impact. Cathay Pacific serves as Google's inaugural commercial airline partner in the Asia-Pacific region and the first worldwide to test contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul flight routes. The collaboration will now proceed to an expanded second trial phase covering Cathay's extensive Asian and trans-Pacific network. Because persistent contrails are estimated to generate around one-third of the aviation sector's net climate impact, deploying software-driven predictive AI offers airlines an immediate operational method to curtail emissions without modifying existing aircraft or jet fuel supplies.
