Carney names broad team to advise on tense US-Canada trade talks

Canada’s prime minister Mark Carney has formed a 24‑member, cross‑party advisory committee to steer economic relations with the US as Washington shifts to protectionist trade measures. The move follows steep US tariffs ordered on Canadian steel, aluminum, copper, lumber and automotive sectors and an informal Canadian boycott of US travel and goods. Carney warned the policy shift has turned historic US ties into economic vulnerabilities and said the council will meet first on 27 April ahead of a scheduled review of the North American trade agreement in July. Markets sensitive to trade and currency risk — particularly USD/CAD — may see greater downside pressure on the Canadian dollar and higher volatility for commodity and autos sectors while policy uncertainty persists.
