Cap-Weighted S&P 500 Outpaces Equal-Weighted Index Across 10-Year and Short-Term Horizons

Market-cap-weighted S&P 500 funds continue to significantly outperform equal-weighted strategies across multiple timeframes due to mega-cap technology concentration. The cap-weighted SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (SPYM) rose 322.64% over 10 years, 87.37% over five years, and 14.49% year-to-date, compared to 202.99%, 50.52%, and 12.36% gains respectively for the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP). SPYM holds concentrated positions including Apple at 6.59% ($10.1 billion of $153.9 billion net assets), Amazon at 3.62%, and Broadcom at 2.77%. Conversely, RSP quarterly rebalances holdings equally, tilting toward industrials, financials, materials, and real estate.
