Canada August Trade Surplus Jumps to C$4.2 Billion on Surging US Exports
Canada's merchandise trade surplus widened sharply to C$4.20 billion in August 2026, surpassing consensus expectations of C$1.55 billion and July's revised surplus of around C$790 million. The sixth consecutive monthly surplus was driven by a 2.5% increase in exports alongside a 2.0% decline in imports, marking the first import contraction in seven months. Bilateral trade with the United States led the expansion, as Canadian exports to the US surged 8.1% to push the bilateral surplus to a record C$11.2 billion, though analysts and Statistics Canada cited potential front-running of shipments ahead of US tariffs.
