Can Apple's M6 & M5 Ultra Narrow the AI Gap With GOOGL & MSFT?
Apple Inc. has introduced its latest custom silicon processors, the M6 and M5 Ultra chips, aimed at accelerating compute-intensive artificial intelligence workloads directly on devices. The M6 chip, manufactured on a 2-nanometer process, features a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and up to 170GB/s unified memory bandwidth. The high-end M5 Ultra processor offers up to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB of unified memory with 1.2TB/s bandwidth, designed to run massive large language models locally without cloud dependence. The hardware launch comes as Apple faces intensified competition from tech peers Alphabet and Microsoft, both of which are aggressively deploying AI across widespread consumer ecosystems, enterprise productivity suites, and cloud platforms. Apple's Mac revenue surged 29% year over year to $10.4 billion in Q3 fiscal 2026, supported by an active installed base of over 2.5 billion devices. However, Apple shares trade at a premium forward P/E of 32.77X and hold a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), reflecting investor caution over competitive positioning in generative AI.
