Cambridge Ranks Ethereum Among Lowest-Energy PoS Blockchains
Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s July 12 study places Ethereum near the bottom of proof-of-stake energy intensity rankings, reporting 7.87 GWh annual use and 33 kWh per $1 million market value. The findings build on earlier July 10-11 reports confirming a 99.98% drop from the pre-Merge era’s 58.26 TWh lifetime consumption, 0.90 MW continuous draw, 2.37 ktCO₂e emissions, and 56.4% sustainable electricity share. With roughly 894,000 validators and 8,522 nodes, Ethereum’s footprint is now driven primarily by local grid mix rather than protocol design, strengthening its ESG appeal versus peers such as Solana.
