BYD Outsold Tesla by Roughly 77,000 EVs Again in Q2. Can Tesla Close the Gap?
China's BYD has extended its lead over Tesla in the global electric vehicle delivery race, delivering 557,090 battery electric vehicles (EVs) in the second quarter compared to Tesla's 480,126 deliveries—a gap of roughly 77,000 units. Wall Street consensus tracked by Visible Alpha projects BYD's annual EV sales to reach 2.4 million units this year versus Tesla's 1.65 million, with the divergence widening to 4.0 million versus 2.65 million by 2030. BYD's structural dominance is supported by high domestic adoption where EVs represent 55% of Chinese auto sales, extensive model variety, and deep vertical integration across batteries and powertrains. In contrast, Tesla relies on the Model 3 and Model Y for over 97% of its sales after halting Model S and Model X production. However, market analysts highlight that Tesla's valuation case is increasingly detached from traditional unit delivery metrics. Instead, the company's medium-to-long term trajectory hinges heavily on the potential deployment of its autonomous Cybercab fleet and high-margin recurring robotaxi services.
