Bitdeer Breaks Ground on 100 MW Alberta Site With on-Site Gas Power
Bitdeer has begun construction on a $155 million (C$214m) integrated energy-and-compute hub near Fox Creek, Alberta, combining a 101 MW natural‑gas power plant with roughly 100 MW of computing capacity. The site, energized in Q2 2027 target, will operate behind‑the‑fence under Alberta’s bring‑your‑own‑generation framework with a 99 MW interconnection to the grid, allowing curtailment or export during stress events. Bitdeer plans a mining‑first deployment that can later host AI and high‑performance computing workloads, using dry cooling and CO2 capture to limit carbon intensity. Market impact: the project exemplifies miners’ shift toward pairing dedicated generation with data centers to preserve mining cash flow while positioning for higher‑value AI demand, potentially easing grid constraints and influencing future data‑center permitting and developer strategies in energy markets.
