Coinbase software engineer Alex Wormuth has launched an experimental trading model dubbed "Stonkfly," which connects a full simulation of an adult male fruit fly's central nervous system to live Bitcoin market data. The simulated insect brain was allocated a $100 starting balance to execute BTC-USDC trades on the exchange. Just one day after deployment, the experimental bot managed to record a modest $1 profit. The system functions by converting public Coinbase market price feeds into RGB visual representations, which are then transmitted into thousands of simulated sensory neurons corresponding to the insect's visual system. Profitable trades stimulate 15 identified PAM11 dopamine neurons to reinforce behavior, while losses trigger two PPL101 aversive signaling neurons. Observers note that profitable learning has not yet been scientifically proven, as early gains may merely reflect market noise. The trading initiative follows a significant neuroscience breakthrough involving Google Research and other institutions that successfully mapped the complete 166,700-neuron connectome of an adult male fruit fly (MaleCNS v1.0), sparking a series of creative simulations across video games and algorithmic trading.
