Bitcoin wallets untouched for 10 years moved $40 million. Most avoided exchanges

Six Bitcoin wallets untouched since between 2011 and 2014 moved a combined 553.59 BTC, valued at approximately $40 million, between August 16 and August 26. Although movements of decade-old coins frequently trigger market anxieties regarding early holders cashing out and dumping supply, on-chain analysis reveals that five of the six addresses transferred their assets to non-exchange wallets. Only one address sent 40 BTC to German custody and trading platform Boerse Stuttgart Digital. According to data from Galaxy Research, overall dormant Bitcoin activity fell in the second quarter to its lowest level since the third quarter of 2022. Following active distribution periods during 2024 and 2025, dormant coin activity in 2026 is pacing at less than half of the previous year's total. Recent transfers appear primarily driven by custodial reorganization, hardware wallet security mitigations, and responses to legal property claims rather than aggressive market selling.
