Bitcoin volatility drops to 1.5th percentile as Fidelity flags ‘coiled spring' setup

Bitcoin's realized volatility has dropped to the 1.5th percentile of all historical trading days, signaling that the cryptocurrency is experiencing one of the quietest trading environments in its history. Fidelity Digital Assets highlighted the phenomenon as a classic 'coiled spring' setup, noting that extreme volatility compression combined with historically tight Bollinger Band Widths has typically preceded substantial price breakouts. Bitcoin is currently consolidating around $65,000, having drifted lower since its October 2025 all-time high. Alongside subdued price movement, spot trading volumes have dried up to levels not seen since 2019, pointing to depressed retail and speculative activity across major spot exchanges. Fidelity's historical analysis shows that periods where one-year realized volatility touches historical extremes have overwhelmingly resolved to the upside across previous cycles. However, analysts also warn that low volume thins out order book depth, meaning incoming market orders could trigger amplified price swings once volatility inevitably expands.
